I just found out my nephew is going to ask his girl friend to marry him,
So he want’s to get a nice ring.

He makes about 16,000 a year and he is going to spend $17,000 on a wedding ring.
The ring only cost $8,500 but he is paying 20% interest for 7 years so that pushes the total price up to around $17,000

I told him I know a guy who can make the same ring for around $2500 but the guy is kind of busy and you never know if he will have it done by Christmas or not, my nephew said he didn’t want to take a chance on it not being ready in time so he would just go ahead and pay the $17,000 because there wouldn’t be any problem getting that ring before Christmas.

He wants to ask her to marry him on Christmas day.

After he pays taxes, utilities, food, and his car payment. The ring payment is about what he has left over from his paycheck.
So he is spending all of his extra money for the next 7 years on a ring.

Ok, my wedding ring cost about $750 - but that was a long time ago and we were University students. (the marriage did go down in flaming wreckage, but I don't think the cost of the ring was the problem)...actually it was very lovely...well designed.
People get weird about Weddings and Funerals and loose perspective. To go horribly in debt for either is stupid. It has really got to the point where the more you spend, the more you love someone. Same with Christmas gift buying...
Don't get me wrong I love jewelery and will pay a fair amount for something and don't mind paying more for something that's actually better, but I would be very hard pressed to tell you the difference between a $4,000 ring and a $10,000...in fact sometimes the cheaper one is better designed, to make up for the smaller diamond.
I love those shopping shows...like "The Shopping Bags" and they are always doing that...taking something expensive and cheaper and having people see if they can decide which is better based on something else other than sticker price. 9 times out of 10 people choose the cheaper (not usually the cheapest if it's a group, but the lower middle).

Goodness me, that a great deal of money to spent on a ring. I am not a Scot but I tend be like them when it comes to spending money. That is, I dont spend money I dont have. And if I could get the ring for so much cheaper but might have to wait, then I would wait. I am sure the girl would understand. I know I would. But other people see things in a different way to me.

I just hope she doesn't lose it.

(in the first 7 years anyway) :)
