Investigators going through mail that a U.S. Postal Service employee is accused of stealing over the last two years have not determined when — or if — they will deliver the property to its owners.

Earlier this month, authorities recovered an estimated 22 bins-worth of mail buried in the front yard of a mobile home on Turner Road in Mebane. Some mail was also found inside the house and a vehicle, both opened and unopened. Some partially burned or buried mail was confiscated.

The investigation is being handled by the U.S. Postal Service Office of the Inspector General.

The department’s spokeswoman, Agapi Doulaveris, said there hasn’t been a decision about what the Postal Service will do with the confiscated mail.

“We are doing our best to get everything resolved,” Doulaveris said.

Authorities said most of the mail was advertisements, bills and general mail. According to the Alamance County Sheriff’s Department, the Inspector General’s office came last week to collect some of the evidence, sorting the mail by hand.

Most of the items they were looking for were first-class mail, which USPS says are postcards, letters, large flat envelopes and small packages.

A U.S. Postal Service employee, Sandra Gayle Wilson, 47, of Turner Road, has been charged with stealing hundreds of pieces of mail along her route. Four other family members have been charged with helping her conceal it.

Authorities have received numerous complaints about undelivered mail from Sandra Wilson’s route, both in Alamance and Orange counties, sheriff’s spokesman Randy Jones said.

Enola Rice, spokeswoman from the U.S. Postal Service, said Sandra Wilson has been given an administrative leave of absence pending the outcome of the investigation

Wilson is a rural carrier based in Hillsborough. According to the U.S. Postal Service, her main route is in northeastern Alamance County, along N.C. 86 north and south in Orange County and some areas of Durham County.

She has been employed by the U.S. Postal Service since February 1997.

We had a postman a couple years ago who was too lazy to deliver all his mail, so he would work for a half hour or so then just go to a dumpster and throw all the rest of the mail away.

They thought he had been doing this for a couple of years, when he got caught.

so if you don't get your mail, now you know why.
