What does this mean for sites like this one? Comments?

To me this sounds like we are losing are right to trade movies or what ever we want on the internet. kind of like what aol did to alot of sites they forced them to go to irc or torrents. More and more the goverments are are taking away are rights. my question is this will they shut down sites like usenet and the other pay sites i bet not. but because we choose to share with each other we pay the price. this is not right at all. next thing you know they will shut down the internet completely. or just make it a news service. Why is it that the darn goverment goverments have to stick there nose into everything. do we not have rights. next thing you know we will not only have to pay to get on the internet but we will have to pay to go site to site on top of what we pay now. I think it is high time we as internet users remember the words of one american give me liberty or give me death. translated for my friends in canada (ps that was ment as a joke when i said canadaians i really ment the world) give me my internet and leave me alone or ill cancel my internet service and then let the internet service provider and advertisers yell at the goverment for there lost profits. the internet provides alot of money for some companies and there only means of selling there goods.hell yes i am pissed. share this with everyone all sites if you wish and send it out to the world its time we stand up for are rights.

Whooooa, there!! We, as Internet Users, DO NOT have rights to anyone's copyrighted property!! We at UTOPIA provide, as do many others, a listing of what is available on the internet. These links are provided for educational and testing purposes only! If you find a program suits your needs, then BUY it!! We, as individuals, do not have a right to make copies of movies or programs we do not own, and only 1 backup of those we do. Trading property we have no right to IS illegal and always has been!! These laws are made to protect the folks who have invested thier time and effort into producing a product FOR PROFIT. We at UTOPIA only provide a listing, and none of these files exist on our server!!!

It can be noted that I, Webscout™ has promoted the purchase of DVD's ie Amazon..DeepDiscountDVD on this site. I support the industry..recent purchase of $110. Dennis12A can support that claim.
I also have a fairly large Retail CD collection.
I am not quite ready for sainthood yet...but close. :D :haha:

So do we get our cd/dvd surcharge back????
In a press release issued just prior to Christmas, the Canadian Private Copying Collective (CPCC) announced that its tax on blank CD-R and CD-RW discs will remain at 21 cents per unit until the next set of public hearings are held some time next year and a new tariff is certified by the Copyright Board of Canada.
At 21 cents per disc, the levy on a 50 spindle package of CD-R or CD-RW discs is now $10.50 or about 75% of the retail cost paid by Canadian consumers.
The levy on CD's originally began in 1998 and the levy per recordable CD was initially set at 5.2 cents. At the time CD-R discs were often several dollars per disc so the levy represented only a small percentage of the products overall cost.
As the price of blank optical discs fell, the levy rose. In 2001 the fee rose to 21 cents per CD where it remains to this day. In 2003, the CPCC tried to increase the tax to 59 cents per CD, however, consumer outrage forced the government to withdraw its plans.
In addition to blank CD's, Canadian consumers also pay a 29 cent tax on blank tapes and 77 cent tax on blank CD-R Audio, CD-RW Audio and MiniDiscs as a royalty to the Canadian music industry.

Rule of thumb
Canadian's....if possible buy CD Media in the USA. Americans feel their artists make enough money as it is.
Canada feels that actors make enough money (most are American) and not enough CDN actors to justify a tax on DVD media. People would revolt if they did...maybe.
Americans....if possible buy DVD media in Canada...when there is a good sale.
The above media is ideal for backup copies...ie for cottage...car....etc. (for you and you ALONE)
Also it should be illegal for your family and friends to listen to CD's and DVD's that you have purchased and they have not. They should be considered...leachers :haha:
You should tax them and in turn send the tax money to the Fed Gov.
That is what I would do if I were in charge.

All I can find here is information... links... no "forum ftp server"... just public domain information... as I read the new law it says distributing copyright material is illegal not distributing public domain information about where to find it...

I also think it will be very unlikely that an http based forum is going to see much action untill some "easier targets" are persued first... as with any new law that can be challenged they will not want to loose any president setting cases in the early going.. I'd bet pier to pier sharing will be first, just like napster, etc in the states... there should be a ton of time to get things hosted on a chineese server.. ahh, just saying that reminds me of the good old days.. before rapidshare... where you could find anything if you were willing to wait 3 days to D/L it at 5Kbps :-)
