I was just helping someone who I thought was very good with computers. I watched them turn the power off on their computer with windows running about half a dozen programs instead of shutting down the computer, they said it was faster.

This can cause problems and I suggested this to them, and they assured me that they had been doing this for years and it had never caused a problem so I was wrong.

I tried a couple more times to suggest this may not be a good idea but they were certain so I just dropped it.

This person knows a lot about computers but I guess not everything. Anyway, if there is anyone else out there that does not know (but is interested in learning) :) when you turn the power off to your computer you lose everything in memory, when you click start shutdown then windows writes everything in memory to the hard disk.

As long as nothing critical is lost then windows will start up find the next time, but your taking a chance each time you do this.

If you have a stuck program you should frist try to close it, then use control-alt-delete and use the task manager and try to end the task, also try alt-F4 if none of those work then you do have to power down your computer sometimes.

I asked my friend how often they had to reinstall windows they said at least once or twice a month. I told them I have not had to do this in 2 or 3 years. Then said I was just very lucky. :D

This is old news for most, but maybe not everyone.
