Daryl Sattui the California vintner decided one day he wanted to live in a Castle so he built one for himself.
it is 121,000 sauare feet, and has 4 levels underground with a medieval style torture chamber including an antique iron maiden which he bought for $13,000 in Pienza Italy. Sattui is 65 years old and says he has spent everything he has making his authentic vision of a Tuscan castle. It has a moat, drawbridge, iron-gated entrance, five towers with battlements, a church, gargoyles, and wrought-iron sconces. All the iron gates have been aged with acid to give the castle an ancient appearance. People were flown in from Italy and Denmark to oversee the construction and make it more authentic, workers from six european countries were used and materials from 8 countires. One bricklayer said after touring the house "It looks like Sattui's got more money than sense." Sattui is the son of a cab driver who borrowed money and lived out of a van while starting Sattui Winery in 1975. Sattui said "I have a philosophy that average people can do great things if they don't know they're average." ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() when he dicides he doesn't want to live in his castle anymore, I hope they start giving tours, I would really like to see this place.
